Characteristics

Hardy Annual

An easy to grow annual to 45cm with green, lobed leaves and stems and flower buds that are softly hairy. Large flowers measure up to 8cm across, with crimson red petals distinctly marked at the base by black spots, which make the flowers resemble a ladybird. Flowers are short-lived but prolific, with each plant producing two dozen flowers or more. Good as a cut flower or mass planted in beds, borders and rock gardens. Attracts bees.

For best results sow directly into the soil where they are to grow. If grown early indoors use a growing container that can be planted directly into the soil such as jiffy pots as seedlings do not like root disturbance.

Care

Optional: Pinch out the growing tips of poppy plants to encourage denser growth with stronger stems and more flowers. Using sharp secateurs or snips remove the top set of leaves, cutting just above a set of lower leaves.

Feed

Feed with a soluble fertiliser every two weeks for stronger plants.
